Category:Source port

From thecrankyhermit

Games that have been ported from legacy code (or, rarely, reverse engineered) to modern PC architecture, often with significant quality of life enhancements.

Three major sub-categories of these exist:

  • Freeware source port. Links to the full, upgraded game are included in the capsule review body.
  • Open source port. The game is open source, but not freeware. You have to purchase the game and then manually upgrade it with the ported binaries. Links to binary replacements are included in the capsule review body.
  • Official source port. The game may or may not be open source (usually not), but the developers have released or outsourced an official source port version, usually as a commercial product, which can be purchased and played with enhancements out of the box.

The last category sometimes includes games which have had their graphics and sounds completely remade, but the underlying game code is or appears to be the same. I only include these here then I think they are a suitable replacement for the original.
