You're playing it wrong: Loom

From thecrankyhermit

Loom was released in 1990, on floppy disks, with EGA graphics. The music was composed for the Roland MT-32, though to save production costs, MT-32 support required an upgrade disk sold separately, since the majority of home PCs did not have this device.

In 1991, a CD-ROM edition was released for the FM-Towns computer, featuring digital music and partially upgraded VGA graphics, but no spoken dialog. In 1992, a different CD-ROM edition was released for PC, with different digital music, fully upgraded VGA graphics, and full voice acting. This 1992 edition is the one available on Steam.

Unfortunately, if you play that version and no other, you're playing it wrong. More than half of the dialog is flat out missing. This is because it was originally uncompressed, and severely editing the script was the only way they could fit all the uncompressed audio onto a disc. Although the voice acting is well done, they snipped out every bit of humor, character, and really only left enough dialog intact to convey the bare bones of the plot.

Compare this section of the original script:
Hetchel: The boy must be told the truth about his birth, Elder Clothos.
Hetchel: His talent awakens!
Hetchel: Soon he will wield the power of Weaving, whether we choose to guide him or not.
Hetchel: We dare not desert Bobbin now.
Lachesis: Stubborn old fool!
Lachesis: The secrets you reveal to Cygna's son may be turned against us.
Lachesis: That is why his training was forbidden by this Council!
Atropos: Enough, Lachesis.
Atropos: We need not explain our decisions.
Atropos: It grieves me to see your many years of faithful service end in this disgrace.
Atropos: But the wisdom of the Elders may not be questioned. That is the final Rule of Membership.
Atropos: Another one of your students, Lady Cygna, learned the terrible price of defiance in this very chamber seventeen years ago. Better that you had heeded that lesson.
Hetchel: My destiny is in your hands, Elders.

to this equivalent section from the pared-down CD-ROM script:
Hetchel: His talent is awakening, and the power is very strong in him.
Hetchel: We dare not desert him now!
Lachesis: Stubborn old fool!
Lachesis: Who are YOU to decide such things?
Atropos: Enough, Lachesis.
Atropos: Hetchel, I am grieved to see your many years of faithful service end in such disgrace.
Hetchel: My destiny is yours to weave.

In addition, the VGA "upgrade" was done by five different artists without any direction or collaboration, and it lacks consistency, as well as plenty of flair and atmosphere, compared to the EGA original which represents the singular vision of designer Brian Moriarty.

You can 'upgrade' to the FM-Towns version with this fan patch. This restores the full script. But the only way to truly experience the game as its designer intended is with the EGA floppy version, with the MT-32 patch and music. The easiest way to play this version is with ScummVM, and to enable its MT-32 emulation (which requires MT-32 ROMs, normally not distributable).
